Pools Women see off late setback to produce a twist of their own as they emerged 2-1 winners over Redcar Town at Wolviston
Despite a disappointing start to the season, confidence within the squad remained high, and performances have been improving with each game.
It was no surprise, then, when after an early spell of pressure, Pools took the lead in the 5th minute.
Evie Smith received the ball 30 yards out, cut inside, and unleashed a powerful low strike from 25 yards that the Redcar goalkeeper couldn’t hold.
Pools worked hard to find a second goal through the lively Abi Cope and the tireless efforts of Grace Raw, but a combination of strong Redcar defending and some missed chances kept the score at 1–0.
Redcar also pressed for an equaliser, with the game being played at a high tempo and in a competitive spirit.
However, the Pools defence stood firm, ensuring goalkeeper Ella Field was rarely troubled.
The second half saw Pools enjoying plenty of possession, but once again unable to convert the few chances they created.
Redcar continued to pose a threat, with only a one-goal lead keeping things tense.
In the 88th minute, a rare lapse in concentration proved costly as Redcar switched play to the left wing.
Despite the onrushing Pools goalkeeper Katie Rowland, a clever lob found its way into the empty net to level the score.
Undeterred, Pools launched straight into attack from the restart.
After some neat interplay between Anya Geary and Becca Emery, the ball fell to Linsey Mochan, who skipped past a defender into the penalty area before being brought down, as the referee pointed to the spot.
Mochan took responsibility and calmly slotted the penalty into the bottom corner in the 89th minute, restoring Pools’ lead and sealing a dramatic 2–1 victory — despite the goalkeeper diving the right way.
Next up: Pools host Wallsend Ladies at Wolviston FC on Sunday, 1st November (2pm kick-off).
