Weekly Roundup | Academy Angle

Both our U19s and SYT were victorious last week, while our U17s earned a valuable point on the road.

Here’s everything you need to know…

U19s

Our U19s stormed to an incredible 2-0 victory over Gateshead FC to advance to the next round of the Academy Cup.

Alex Cross’s men pressed aggressively in the opening stages and after just eight minutes, found their well-deserved opener, courtesy of a penalty that was blasted home by Kian Foreman.

After relentless pressure told, Foreman grabbed his and Pools second early in the second half, when he found himself in space on the edge of the area, before shifting the ball onto his right foot and curling home into the top right corner.

Manager Alex Cross: “I thought the performance was really positive, we were excellent out of possession in particular.

“We were beaten comfortably by Gateshead earlier on in the season so to perform the way we did against the current league leaders was a testament to the players.

“Kian took his penalty and second half goal superbly.”

U17s

Our U17s claimed a point on the road this week, as they drew 2-2 with Chesterfield FC.

Goals from Standing and Duffield secured a great result against the league leaders.

Following the result, our Gary Liddle’s side sit fourth in the table, just six points of top.

SYT

Our SYT recorded a fantastic 3-1 win over Redcar AFC in the Northeast College League.

After going 1-0 down in the opening stages, Pools kept up the pressure and found their well-deserved equaliser 18 minutes into the second half. The breakthrough came from Reuben Sharpe who managed to finish from a tight angle.

Just 16 minutes later, Sharpe would have his and Pools second, when he found space in the box and slotted home from close distance.

In the closing stages of the game, Aaron Rowley secured victory for Damian Shanahan’s side, when he pounced on a goalkeeping error to tap home into an empty net. x

Manager Damian Shanahan: “After going 1-0 down and Redcar going down to ten men, they set into a good defensive shape and made it very difficult to break down.

“One thing this team does is back each other and with consistent pressure we managed to get that equaliser, then another two goals quickly followed.

“We continue our 100 percent record, and today’s victory is ultimately down to the lads never stopping until the final whistle.”
