Seven goal thriller in Solihull

Free-scoring Hartlepool United moved up to 13th in the National League after an incredible 4-3 victory at Solihull Moors.

Storm Bert blew down Damson Park, where it rained goals with Joe Grey scoring twice in between strikes by Adam Campbell and Mani Dieseruvwe for Pools.

Boss Lennie Lawrence made one change with Jack Hunter, returning for his first start in two months, coming in for the suspended Dan Dodds. Nathan Sheron then moved out to right-back.

Pools were playing into Storm Bert in the first half and produced some nice football. Campbell shot just wide on 16 minutes but from the resulting goal-kick, the Sky Blues were gifted the lead.

Attempting to play out from the back, a defensive blunder saw Moors lose possession and Campbell was first to pounce, sliding in to put the ball into the back of the home net.

Conor Wilkinson fired miles over on a Solihull break-out on the 33rd minute, but two minutes later, the in-form striker found the target.

There was a good low ball in by Bradley Stevenson from the left and Wilkinson controlled well before finishing strongly past Brad Young.

However, Pools were back in front within four minutes. It came via great work by Luke Charman, whose hard ball in was palmed out by the keeper but the alert Grey headed over the stricken Laurie Walker to make it 2-1.

That goal was the spark for a strong finish to the half from Pools.

A brilliant passing move on 42 minutes ended with Dieseruvwe’s shot on the turn saved by Walker, who then pushed away a long-range effort by Campbell.

There was a change of referee for the second half with fourth official Declan Brown taking over from the injured Will Davis.

When Wilkinson fired over from the first attack of the second half it served a warning to Pools, which wasn’t heeded.

Solihull broke forward in the 52nd minute, when Wilkinson made the hard yards before squaring to Matty Warburton whose shot Young could not keep out.

Charman shot wide from 25 yards as Pools pressed for a leveller, but they fell behind for the first time in the 59th minute.

Solihull swung over a high, hanging corner which Pools could not clear and Stevenson forced the ball home for 3-2.

But just 60 seconds later, the Sky Blues were back on terms.

Pools attacked down the right where Charman delivered the perfect cross for Grey to nod in at the far post from close range.

The away side piled on the pressure for a fourth goal and Campbell and Dieseruvwe had shots blocked by desperate Moors defending.

But Pools were not to be denied and they struck again on 65 minutes.

The goal again came from the right flank with Charman swinging over a brilliant cross which Dieseruvwe met first time for his ninth goal of the season.

Charman then had shot blocked after great work by Nicky Featherstone, and David Ferguson set up a hat-trick chance for Grey but the keeper made a diving save.

The away goal led a little bit of a charmed life in the dying moments, but some resilient defending kept Moors out for a memorable victory.
