Match Report | Carlisle United 3-1 Pools

Hartlepool United suffered a 3-1 defeat to Carlisle United under the Brunton Park lights as they slip to 11th in the Enterprise National League

Pools had the first chance of the game just seconds into the match, as Jermaine Francis was fed through, but he was only able to shoot at Gabe Breeze from a yard out.

Carlisle struck early, setting the tone in the 5th minute when Cameron Harper produced a ruthless first-time finish after some slick build-up play from Regan Linney down the flank.

The early goal unsettled Hartlepool, whose defensive shape was tested from the off.

Pools responded with heart, as they fashioned a glorious opportunity inside the opening minute themselves, when Jermaine Francis was played through, only to be denied by a sharp save from the Carlisle keeper, Gabe Breeze.

But the miss proved costly — Carlisle grew in confidence, pressing the hosts back.

Midway through the half, Hartlepool’s shotstopper Harvey Cartwright limped off with an injury, forcing an early reshuffle at the back.

That disruption seemed to feed into Carlisle’s momentum.

As the half wore on, they continued to probe and push, and just before the interval, they struck again.

A teasing cross into the box was met by Georgie Kelly, who rose above the rearguard to nod home and double Carlisle’s advantage.

At the break, it was a harsh scoreline for Pools, who’d shown glimpses of intent but had been undone by lapses at key moments.
