Late drama as Grey grabs headlines

Darren Sarll’s men secured all three points on the road to maintain their 100% record away from home. Joe Grey’s late strike into the bottom corner sent the 264 Pools supporters back to the North East in jubilant fashion.

The opening stages of the game saw both sides have efforts at goal, with Nathan Sheron slotting Mani Dieseruvwe through on goal, but his effort was easily saved. At the other end, Joel Dixon was called into action as he held an effort from a Tamworth free-kick on the edge of the box.

Jack Hunter forced an excellent save from the home goalkeeper but the rest of the first half saw little to no real chances for either side. However, just before half-time, Adam Campbell’s cross was met by Dieseruvwe who dropped the ball down for Hunter, though his effort was saved low by the Tamworth keeper.

The two sides went into half-time at a stalemate, as Hartlepool have in their previous two fixtures.

With not much to shout about at the start of the second half either, Hartlepool made their first change on 66 minutes with Anthony Mancini replacing Campbell. With 15 mins to go Mancini did well to get to the byline, before cutting back to Sheron, but his effort flew over from 12 yards.

Hartlepool finally made a breakthrough on 83 minutes, as Mancini’s effort came back to Sheron who slotted Grey through. In composed fashion, Grey cut inside the defender before beating the keeper with a low and hard finish for his first goal of the season.

A huge scare came in the 93rd minute as Tamworth put the ball in the box, where their leaping header crashed off the bar. The ball then bounced down onto the edge of the six-yard box,  where the rebound smashed off the post. A big escape for Pools with just two mins to play.

The final whistle blew and Darren Sarll’s men claimed their second win in as many games on the road and maintained their unbeaten run to start the season. Grey’s late goal was enough to secure all three points.
