Reyes Cleary has turned himself into a fans’ favourite during his two months at the Prestige Group Stadium.
The winger is on loan at Pools from West Brom, having joined the Baggies at a young age.
“I was playing in the park at the age of six,” Cleary explained.
“I used to play with my friends every day and one day, I decided to join a Sunday League team.
“I was only there for a season and just before the final game, I went on trial with West Brom. I’ve been there ever since and I’ve loved my time there.
“I used to be a ball boy at West Brom, so playing for them now is incredible. I used to grow up admiring the pitch and the players, and now being able to pull the boots on myself is an amazing feeling.
“I’m really grateful and I’ll always have time for the younger fans as I was once in their shoes.”
A decade after joining West Brom as a child, Cleary was in action for the Baggies’ first team in the Emirates FA Cup.
“I made my senior debut at age of 17,” he said
“It was against Brighton in the FA Cup – we lost in extra time but it was an experience that I’ll never forget.
“I trained with the U21s the day before and we finished the session early – the coach told a few of us to go over to the first team pitch and help with match prep.
“That’s when I found out I was going to be involved in the squad – it was a great feeling.
“There are so many people at West Brom that have helped in my development. The likes of Richard Beale, Chris Brunt and James Morrison have supported me greatly.
“They’ve praised me but they’ve also worked on my weaknesses and helped me become a better player – I’m massively grateful for that support.”
Since joining Pools, Cleary has scored twice in 11 appearances, including a stunner last time out at Eastleigh.
The winger has made the National League Team of the Week twice, and he shows no signs of slowing down.
“I’ve loved my time at Pools so far,” he explained.
“I spent the first half of the season at Walsall which was a good experience – I didn’t play as much as I would’ve liked but it taught me to always be ready in case an opportunity came my way.
“They were top of League Two and winning every game, so it was a good environment to be in and learn from.
“I went back to West Brom in January, played a few U21s games, and heard of Hartlepool’s interest. It was a no-brainer for me to come here and show what I can do.
“I’ve found out a lot about myself on and off the pitch. I’m playing in different roles and positions, which is helping different attributes, and it’s the first time I’ve moved away from home so I’m enjoying that as well.
“The fans have helped me massively. Every time I get the ball, I hear their support and that encourages me to get forward and show what I can do. I really appreciate their support.
“I’m always pushing for more – I want more goals and assists, and I want more points for the team – they go hand in hand. Hopefully we can have a strong end to the season.”
