Academy Angle | Weekly Roundup

Both our U17s and SYT were victorious last weekend while our U19s suffered defeat on the road

Here’s everything you need to know…

U19s
Our U19s fell to a 2-0 defeat away at Guiseley in the National League U19 Alliance. It marked the first loss for Alex Cross’s men since September.

Despite a tough challenge, our lads battled hard to the final whistle, but Guiseley proved to be too strong on the day.

The loss saw our U19s drop to eighth in the table, ten points off top.

Pools were also without Joe Aungiers and Kian Foreman who were missing due to first team commitments.

Manager Alex Cross: “There were elements of positives around the performance, but our first half was just unrecognisable. We had a real go second half but lacked an edge in the final third.”

He added:

“We have a couple weeks off league action now to address a few things on the training ground and utilise the friendlies we have coming up to rectify some of the areas of focus.”

U17s
Our U17s returned to National League action in style, as they stormed to an incredible 4-1 victory over Darlington.

Gary Liddle’s side found their first goal of the afternoon on the 30-minute mark, courtesy of a fantastic solo goal from Alfie Swift, who dribbled past three players before rounding the goalkeeper to tap home.

Our U17s continued to prod the Darlington defence, before eventually finding their second 20 minutes into the second half. It came after Joe Duffield anticipated the Darlington goalkeepers pass and curled a lovely effort round the keeper from outside the box.

25 minutes later, Pools added a third, when Maxi Ellis converted a free kick from 25 yards out into the top right corner.

Pools kept pushing until the end, and in the dying stages, capped off a sensational performance with a fourth. Maxi Ellis scored his second of the day when he found himself one on one, dinking the ball over the keeper to secure all three points.

Following the result, our U17s moved up to sixth in the National League, just six points behind 1st.

Manager Gary Liddle: “Another good performance from the lads who showed good character to come back from the disappointment of conceding an early goal.

“From then, we dominated the game at both ends of the pitch and it was a good effort from the boys who continue to show really good progress.”

SYT
Our SYT recorded a dominant 3-1 victory over Darlington MG in the Northeast College League.
Damian Shanahan’s side took control in the opening stages and found their well-deserved goal in the 43rd minute when Floyd Jose created room for himself inside the box and slotted home.

Our SYT continued pressing and it took just two minutes for Pools to find a second as Ryan Varney broke behind the defence and managed to convert from a tight angle, hitting both posts before rolling past the Darlington keeper.

12 minutes into the second half, Evan Thompson grabbed Pools 3rd and sealed a fantastic win for our SYT. He found the ball at his feet out wide, before cutting inside and firing home.

Manager Damian Shanahan: “The lads controlled the game from the 1st minute, great to see them build on a strong start in the league and keep up the 100% winning record after 3.”

He added:

“The lads are improving every day and it’s good to see what we work on at training, coming into fruition during games.”
