Women | Pools hit for six by Birtley Town

Hartlepool United Women were left frustrated after a high-scoring encounter with Birtley Town Women ended in a 6–3 defeat, despite a battling performance.

Pools began the game brightly and applying early pressure and looking the more dangerous side during the first ten minutes. However, Birtley were awarded a penalty, which they converted to take the lead.

Pools responded well and soon found an equaliser from a set piece. A well-delivered corner caused problems in the box and Maddy Hillyer reacted quickest to finish and bring the sides level.

The remainder of the first half proved difficult for Pools, as Birtley found their rhythm in attack and added three further goals before the break to take a commanding 4–1 lead into half-time.

Looking to turn the momentum, Hartlepool changed shape in the second half and adopted a more aggressive approach. The adjustment paid off when Catlin Bates pulled a goal back, finishing well to reduce the deficit to 4–2

Birtley, however, responded strongly and added two more goals to extend their lead to 6–2.
Pools continued to battle and were rewarded late on when Grace Raw found the net to make it 6–3, ensuring the scoreline reflected the fight and determination Pools applied throughout the game.

Despite the defeat, there were positives to take from Hartlepool’s attacking play and second-half determination as they look to bounce back in their next fixture against Washington next week
