Having managed over 1000 games in his long-spanning career, Lawrence is one of the most respected and experienced names in the football pyramid.

He first took charge at Charlton Athletic in 1982, spending nine years at the Valley before leading Middlesbrough to promotion to the new Premier League.

Lawrence then managed the likes of Bradford, Luton, Grimsby and Cardiff. He also held consultancy roles at Cardiff and Bristol Rovers.

After spells as assistant manager at Crystal Palace, Bolton Wanderers and Nottingham Forest, Lawrence returned to consultancy roles with Newport County and Stevenage.

He joined Pools in November 2022 as Non-Executive Director, but was later installed as caretaker manager in January 2024. Upon Kevin Phillips' appointment, Lawrence was named in the management team as assistant coach.
