Pools Women win back-to-back in pre-season

Hartlepool United Women made it two wins from three in pre-season as Alex Curl’s side claimed a 3-1 win over Chester-le-Street Amazons on Sunday afternoon.

Amazons, last year’s winners of the Durham FA County League, defended well against Pools but trailed just before the half-time break.

The opener came as Macy Thornton sent a sensational strike from 40 yards into the back of the net to put Hartlepool in front.

Zara Johnson and Libbie Trainor both got on the scoresheet during the second half, while Amazons pulled a goal back from distance.

Pools’ next test will see a home fixture against Darlington Women on Thursday night at Metcalfe Park.

“Sunday was a tough test with our squad full of young players,” explained Alex Curl.

“In spite of this, the players put on a real professional performance and dominated the game from start to finish. An audacious lob from 40 yards saw us take a well-deserved lead into the break.

“Patient build-up play led to a well-worked second on the hour mark before Amazons pulled one back with a great long-range strike. The reaction from the squad was brilliant to settle the game down again and play at our own pace.

“We finished the game strongly, adding a third in the final minutes to create a scoreline which really reflected our performance. I’m really pleased with how well we’re implementing the new style of play in such a short amount of time. There are a lot of promising signs as we approach the season.”
