Hartlepool United is delighted to confirm that Owen Hampson has joined the Club following the expiry of his contract with Sheffield United.
The 21-year-old midfielder has agreed a one-year contract at Victoria Park through to June 2027, with the Club holding the option to extend the deal by a further year until June 2028. The deal is subject to the relevant approvals.
The Welsh youth international arrives at Pools having spent a decade within Manchester United’s academy before joining Sheffield United in January 2021, where he established himself as one of the Blades’ most promising young midfielders.
He played an instrumental role in the Club’s Professional Development League title-winning Under-18 side before progressing into the Under-21 setup, where he helped secure the Professional Development League North title and earned his first professional contract in 2023.
His continued development saw him break into Sheffield United’s senior environment during the 2024/25 season, making appearances in both the Emirates FA Cup and Carabao Cup.
In February 2025, Hampson joined Scottish Championship side Dunfermline Athletic on loan before spending the 2025/26 campaign with National League outfit Boston United as he continued his development in senior football.
Having represented Wales at both Under-19 and Under-21 level, Hampson arrives at an important stage of his career, with the opportunity to continue his progression under former Premier League midfielder Lee Clark.
A composed and intelligent midfielder, the 21-year-old joins Pools with the ambition of establishing himself in senior football while contributing to a squad being assembled to challenge for success during the 2026/27 campaign.
Speaking after agreeing to join Pools, Owen Hampson said: “I’m delighted to be joining Hartlepool United and I can’t wait to get started. This is a massive opportunity for me at a really important stage of my career.
“I’ve learned a huge amount during my time at Manchester United and Sheffield United, but now I’m at the point where I want to establish myself in senior football, make my mark and show what I can do.
“I spoke to a lot of people before making my decision and everyone spoke incredibly highly of the football club. The more conversations I had, the more I heard about the exciting project that is being built here at Pools.
“Chris Maxwell spoke passionately about the direction the Club is heading, the ambition for the future and where he believes this team can go and it was something I wanted to be part of.
“It was clear there is a real vision for the football club and, as a young player looking to establish myself in senior football, that really appealed to me.
“Hartlepool is a massive football club with a passionate fanbase and high expectations, and that’s exactly the type of environment I want to be part of.Â
“I’m hungry to prove myself, work hard every day, establish myself in senior football and do everything I can to help the Club achieve its ambitions.”
The midfielder becomes the latest addition to Lee Clark’s squad this summer, joining Jordan Hugill, Jack Nolan, Brooklyn Ilunga and Corey McKeown at Victoria Park, while Luke Charman, Jack Hunter and Adam Smith have also committed their futures to the Club
Lee Clark, First Team Head Coach at Hartlepool United, said: “We’re delighted to bring Owen to Pools.
“He’s a player we’ve admired for some time and somebody we believe can make a real contribution to what we’re building here.
“What has impressed me most is his attitude and his desire to improve. He’s hungry to learn, willing to work hard and determined to make the most of his ability.
“He has good qualities on the ball, sees the game well and is capable of influencing matches from midfield, but he’s also willing to work hard for the team and put the collective first. Those are qualities that are extremely important to us.
“At 21, he’s at an important stage of his career. He’s had an excellent grounding in the game and gained valuable experience in senior football, but now it’s about taking that next step and establishing himself at this level.
“We believe this is the right environment for him to do that. He’ll be challenged, he’ll be supported and he’ll have every opportunity to continue progressing as a player.
“We’re building a squad with the right balance of experience, quality, character and ambition, and Owen is another player who fits exactly what we’re looking for.
“We’re excited to start working with him and look forward to helping him take the next step in his career while making a positive contribution to the team.”
Chris Maxwell, Head of Football Operations at Bromby & Partners, said: “Owen is a player we believed could add real value to what we’re building and we’re delighted to bring him to the football club.
“He is another important addition to the squad we’re assembling ahead of the new season and possesses the talent, attitude and competitive edge that we want throughout the group.Â
“We were extremely impressed by his character, maturity and desire to succeed. He has a real hunger to improve, a strong work ethic and a determination to make the most of his ability.
“He is a technically gifted midfielder who combines quality on the ball with a relentless desire to compete, and we believe those attributes make him an excellent fit for the environment we’re creating.
“Although he is still only 21, he has already experienced different challenges during the early stages of his career and those experiences will stand him in good stead as he continues his progression.
“We’re confident that, working alongside Lee and the coaching staff, he has everything required to continue developing while making a positive impact on the team.Â
“Owen is exactly the type of ambitious player we want to bring to this football club. He’s driven to succeed, eager to establish himself in senior football and fully committed to improving every day.
“We’re delighted to welcome him and look forward to seeing him play an important role in what we’re building here.”
