Hartlepool United is delighted to announce the signing of goalkeeper Max Thompson on an initial short-term deal.

The 22-year-old joins having previously represented Newcastle United and will provide competition and cover while Max Merrick is sidelined.

Thompson left his boyhood club in the summer after more than a decade with the Magpies. He progressed through the ranks at St. James’ Park, making a combined 58 appearances at Under-18 and Under-21 level. Under Eddie Howe’s tenure, he was included in every 2025-2026 UEFA Champions League group-stage squad.

During the 2023-2024 season, Thompson joined League One side Northampton Town on a five-month loan, making his professional debut in the League Cup against Swansea City. He went on to make 20 appearances for the Shoe Army, keeping five clean sheets.

The new number 53 subsequently moved to League Two outfit Chesterfield during the 2024-2025 campaign to continue his development at senior level, keeping six clean sheets in 21 appearances for the Spireites.

Most recently, the former England Under-18 international joined Scottish Championship side Ayr United on loan in January, making 10 appearances at Somerset Park.

On signing for Pools, Thompson said: “I’m excited to get started with the club and to get a chance to play having spent some time training with the first team.

“I’m looking forward to supporting the team and hopefully improving our position in the league over the next few weeks.”

“Since the injury to Max Merrick, it’s been a position we’ve been short in, so we’re really pleased to add him to the squad.

“He brings good experience and is looking forward to the challenge of helping us get back on track whilst providing extra competition in the goalkeeping department.”
