Pools exit FA Cup after home defeat to Marine

Hartlepool United exited the Emirates FA Cup after a 2-0 defeat against Marine in the fourth qualifying round at Victoria Park.

Second half goals from Jack Doyle and James Potter in quick succession saw the Mariners advance in the cup.

Sam Lavelle made his Pools debut in one of three changes for the tie against the National League North side, with Max Clark and Jack Nolan also coming into the starting XI.

The hosts started brightly, threatening with the first chance of the game 12 minutes in. Jordan Hugill teed up Nolan just inside the box, who saw his powerful strike towards the top-left corner denied by Jack McIntyre.

From the resulting corner, Chris Popov almost put Pools ahead, but his shot from close-range rolled inches wide.

After Pete Wild’s side had two flashes across the face of Marine’s goal just evade a Pools player, Neo Eccleston found Popov down the right-hand side on 18 minutes, whose effort was comfortable for McIntyre.

Moments before the break, though, the Mariners’ Arjan Raikhy took aim from distance, with his attempt rising over the bar.

Early in the second half, Pools came close to a breakthrough when Nolan picked out Hugill at the back post, but his header looped over McIntyre before crashing off his crossbar twice.

The visitors attacked up the other end a minute later, as Charlie Jolley’s low effort drifted narrowly wide of Max Thompson’s far corner.

On 71 minutes, Marine took the lead, with Doyle firing home into the bottom-left corner from inside the box.

Pools nearly responded three minutes later when – after a driving run from Neo Eccleston – Will Harris latched onto the ball in the box, but couldn’t find the target from a tight angle.

Marine doubled their advantage in the 77th minute when Potter poked home from close range after a deflection fell kindly at his feet for a simple tap-in.

As the game headed towards injury time, McIntyre was called into action twice in quick succession to deny low strikes from Terry Bondo and Harris, as the visitors held out to reach the next stage of the competition.

Pools return to Enterprise National League action next Saturday, when they face newly-promoted Hornchurch at Victoria Park.

HUFC XI: Thompson, McNally ©, Ilunga (Bondo 69′), Hugill (Harris 57′), Eccleston, Sheron, Nolan, Popov (Miley 57′), Deeming (Thornton 78′), Clark (John 69′), Lavelle.

Subs not used: Fisher, Hunter.
