Club Update: Antony Sweeney

9 May 2024

Hartlepool United can confirm that Antony Sweeney’s first team coaching contract will come to an end this month.

In playing and coaching capacities Sweeney has been involved with Pools for over 20 years.

He made his playing debut at the age of 18 after emerging through the Club’s youth system and went on to become a key staple of the Pools side.

He featured heavily when the Club reached the 2005 League One play-off final at the Millennium Stadium against Sheffield Wednesday and again when winning promotion back to League One in 2007.

Sweeney, who was later named club captain by Colin Cooper, departed Pools at the end of the 2013/14 season having made a total of 444 appearances, sitting third in the all-time list.

He returned to the Suit Direct Stadium in 2016 as an Academy coach before taking the step up to the first team staff under Craig Hignett in 2019.

He has subsequently worked with various first team managers across both National League and League Two, as well as holding caretaker positions.

Everyone at the Club would like to thank Tony for his service and wish him the very best of luck in his next chapter.

Tony has not only supported the first team but he’s also played his part in progressing both the Academy and community outreach.

Tony commented:

“I would like thank everyone at the Club for the support they have given me over the years.

“It has given me enormous pride and pleasure to represent Hartlepool United as both a player and as a coach, and I leave with some incredible memories on and off the pitch.

“I want to say a huge thank you to the fans who have been superb with me from the beginning and I hope that the coming years see them celebrating the success that their loyalty deserves.

“I wish everyone success for the future.”

An update regarding Darren Sarll’s backroom staff for the 2024/25 season will follow in due course.
