Academy: Two late goals as Pools defeat second

4 March 2024

Max Storey's late brace helped Pools to a 3-1 victory over second-placed Burton Albion in the EFL Youth Alliance at the weekend.

Ian McGuckin made two changes to the side that were narrowly defeated away to Preston North End last week. Oliver Duthie made his return from injury in the backline, while Millen Burnett was recalled on the right wing.

The visitors created the first chance of the game, with William Ademiluyi latching onto a mistake but Jake Wilkinson made a neat save for Pools early on.

Meanwhile at the other end, Pools scored with their first opportunity on 15 minutes. A threatening period of possession saw Joe Kitching and Millen Burnett link up, before finding Alfie Steel who smashed home inside the area.

That lead lasted just eight minutes before Burton Albion equalised from distance. A wide free-kick was played short to Cyprian Mtenga, and his effort deflected off two defenders before hitting the back of the net.

Wilkinson had to bring his A-game to keep Pools level by the half-time whistle. Burton twice challenged through Che Ranger and Ademiluyi, but the home keeper pulled off two fantastic stops.

Pools grew back into the game after the restart, and almost regained the lead as a mistake allowed Steel through on goal but the striker's driven shot fell wide of the far post.

The hosts eventually found their second in the 70th minute through Storey. Duthie's throw from the right was flicked on, giving left winger Storey the perfect opportunity to slam home at close-range.

The final chance of the game saw Pools make it 3-1, with Storey bagging his second. Steel was stopped at point-blank range moments earlier, but this time he turned provider as Storey took the shot on and curled into the top right corner.

Pools now face back-to-back fixtures against Huddersfield Town, the first of which on Tuesday at Blackhall (12pm kick-off).

Pools: Wilkinson, Duthie, Lynn, Berry, Darcy, Grundle, Burnett (Aungiers), Kitching, Steel, Ormerod (Wood), Storey
