Academy: Ian McGuckin on sticking to our principles in March

13 March 2024

A never-say-die attitude is what Academy boss Ian McGuckin wants his side to display as they approach the business end of the season.

And after three defeats in February, McGuckin admits there's a large feeling of pride with his team's willingness to get back on track in March.

His young squad have defeated Burton Albion, Huddersfield Town and Notts County over the last fortnight, scoring 15 goals in their last four games.

"We had an honest discussion at the start of the month," explained McGuckin.

"We were beaten at home to Huddersfield and it was poor performance. We need to maintain the standards we've shown for large parts of the season. Consistency has been one of our biggest objectives this year because games can just stray away from us at times.

"I'm proud of the lads for taking the information on board and getting back to our beliefs. We've improved as individuals and as a unit. We've created a lot of chances and scored a lot of goals, but getting two clean sheets also deserves some recognition.

"We beat Notts County 6-0 in our most recent game. It was a dominant display, and of course Alfie Steel and Max Storey will take the plaudits for their goals, but it was just a complete team performance.

"The thing that impressed me most was our desire, work rate and commitment. You need that in any squad to be successful and hopefully we can stay at those levels for the upcoming games."

McGuckin also commented on the hectic fixture schedule, with Pools set to play another three games in the next week.

"We're navigating our way through it reasonably well," he added.

"We've had lot of Saturday-Tuesday games and it'll stay like that for the next few weeks, so that's when recovery strategies become important. It's not just what we do on the training pitch, but also how the lads deal with their recovery at home.

"It's important to stamp out excuses, in both academy and senior football. You want players to have their heads screwed on come gameday and take responsibility for their performance.

"With that in mind, we've had to manage the loads really precisely to ensure everyone is at 100%. The more individuals we get performing, the better we'll be as a collective.

"We've had a smaller squad recently with a few lads gaining experience out on loan in senior football. We've received some great feedback - Joel White is getting a run of games for Billingham Town at the moment and Leo Robinson has scored a few for Hebburn.

"We have to look at the players individually and decide what's best for their own development pathway. For example, Max Storey has stayed with us in the Academy and he's growing a lot, as well as gaining confidence with his goals."

Next up for the Academy side is a home fixture against Harrogate Town. The game will take place on Saturday morning at Blackhall, with kick-off at 11am.

"We're fully expecting a tough game at the weekend," stated McGuckin.

"We played Harrogate at the start of the season and it was a challenging game. They've been up and down recently, but will provide another test for us which we're looking forward to.

"We've then got Grimsby at home on Tuesday afternoon but we're just taking it one game at a time."
