Joe Monks appointed as Head of Football Operations

28 September 2023

Hartlepool United are delighted to confirm the appointment of Joe Monks as the Club’s Head of Football Operations.

The role and appointment will build on the work started previously by Darren Kelly and continue to support the Manager whilst also connecting the football department with wider Club operations, the Board and Chairman.

Joe, who holds over a decade of senior professional recruitment experience, will oversee and lead the Club’s scouting and recruitment processes as well as assisting the Manager with performance staff including sports science, medical and analysis, organising football logistics, facility usage and the Academy development.

Primarily in player recruitment and development led roles, Joe previously worked at both academy and first team levels for clubs including Barnet, Brentford, Norwich, Southampton, Colchester and Wolves.

Joe relocated to the North East last season and took up a similar Football Operations Manager role at South Shields. He was instrumental in player recruitment that led the Mariners to achieve promotion to the National League North. Following his success at South Shields, Joe was asked to join Stockport County at the start of this season to head up their newly formed emerging talent programme.

Upon joining Hartlepool United, Joe commented:

“I’m delighted to be joining the Club. The passion of the supporters is infectious, and I can’t wait to support John Askey and his team to help this Club reach its full potential. I want to say thank you to the Chairman and Board for the opportunity and promise the fans I will work as hard as I can for everyone associated with the Club.”

Chairman Raj Singh commented:

“We’re really pleased to welcome Joe to the Club. We’ve been aware of him for a number of years and we’ve been tracking his development. He has an excellent knowledge of players and agents at this level of football and the leagues above, which should support John Askey as we further look to improve the squad, not just this season but in seasons to come.”

“Joe also brings a lot of experience in developing young players through youth programmes, which again is something that the Club is focused on medium to long term. His experience and designated time to help link first team and academy should bolster the great work that all the Club Academy staff have done in recent years.”
