Match report: Morecambe win on penalties!

20 September 2022

A 0-0 draw saw Hartlepool United put another point on the board in the Papa John's Trophy, despite Morecambe winning the subsequent shootout 4-2.

The first half offered little in the way of chances for either side, with Morecambe's long-range efforts failing to trouble Ben Killip.

Pools came closest through Mika Ndjoli, but his effort was blocked and it was a stalemate at the interval.

A triple change at half time saw Pools press the hosts more, and Mark Shelton saw a shot blocked as new manager Keith Curle watched from the stands.

A couple of chances for Ferguson came towards the end of the game, but it remained goalless and the sides gained a point apiece.

The penalty shootout went Morecambe's way, giving them a bonus point. For Pools, Murray and Ferguson saw efforts saved, while Shelton and Crawford netted.

Pools XI: Killip; Tumilty (Sterry 46), Menayese (Murray 46), Lacey, Paterson; Sylla, Niang; Taylor (Ferguson 46), Shelton, Grey (Crawford 62); Ndjoli (Hamilton 86)

Not Used: Letheren, Hastie
