Match preview: Bradford under the lights

18 October 2021

After a disappointing result at Salford’s Peninsula Stadium, Hartlepool United travel to Bradford City in need of an upturn in their away form. The Bantams sit one place above Pools in 10th, having attained the same points as Dave Challinor’s side, but boasting a superior goal difference.

Fan information

All tickets purchased via the Bradford ticket Office must be collected from the players entrance on South Parade. All kiosks inside the ground are cashless.

The Opposition

Much like Pools, Bradford have had a mixed start to their season. Four wins, five draws, and three losses sees them just a point from the play-off places. Last season, the Bantams finished 15th, 14 points from Tranmere in the final play-off place, so they’ll be looking for a better return this year.

The current Bradford side doesn’t feature any former Poolies, though summer signing Caolan Lavery was one of the trialist involved during Pools’ pre-season campaign. Influential centre-back Gary Liddle spent just under two years in Bradford, and he was in the side the famously felled Jose Mourinho’s Chelsea in the FA Cup.

The History

This Tuesday will mark the 91st encounter between the two sides. In the past, Pools have won 32, Bradford have won 34, and 22 games have ended in a draw. The last meeting between the sides was a 1-1 pre-season draw in 2014, and the last competitive game saw Pools run out 5-0 winners in the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy thanks to goals from Luke James, Jonathan Franks, Jack Compton, Christian Burgess, and Nialle Rodney. Former Poolie Jason Kennedy featured for Bradford in the game.

Team News

After making his return from injury on Saturday, Gavan Holohan will be hoping for more minutes on Tuesday. Luke Molyneux, Fela Olomola, and Tyler Burey are all unavailable, so Challinor’s forward options will be limited to Will Goodwin, Mark Cullen, and Mike Fondop, though Joe Grey is also available after a successful comeback from injury.
