Match preview: Everton FC

2 November 2021

Hartlepool United are looking to put Saturday’s defeat to Leyton Orient behind them as they host Everton’s U21 side in the Papa John’s Trophy. Changes are sure to be made after a five-goal blitz from Orient saw Pools leave the capital empty-handed.

The Opposition
In this competition, Everton have won one and lost one. They won the first fixture, defeating Morecambe 1-0, before losing 2-0 to Carlisle in late September. They’re currently level on points with Pools, with both sides still able to qualify with a positive result.

The History
This is the first meeting between Pools and Everton U21, with no previous results against the senior side available, either.

Team News
Jamie Sterry and Neill Byrne were both absent on Saturday, and both will want to be involved against a youthful Everton side. Zaine Francis-Angol returned to the side against Orient, and the left-back will hope to continue his impressive performances at the Vic.

As with previous cup fixtures this season, it’s likely that fringe players will be involved from the start, including Tom Crawford, Martin Smith, and Joe Grey. Patrick Boyes, Ben Killip, and Jonny Mitchell are all available to play in goal for Pools.

Tyler Burey is also unavailable, though the on-loan Millwall attacker is due to return to Pools training in the coming weeks, with the end of November ear-marked as a potential comeback date.

How to Follow
The game will be live streamed and can be available for £10.
