Things Are Looking Positive For Us - Hignett

20 July 2019

Craig Hignett still feels there are things to work on ahead of the new campaign but was satisfied with the way his players performed in victory over Sheffield United Under-23s on Saturday.

Pools ran out 4-2 winners against the young Blades thanks to a long-range strike from Liam Noble, two headers from new signing Jason Kennedy and a wondergoal from the returning Luke Williams.

Afterwards, Hignett paid tribute to his team for their showing but admitted there are things to improve upon with the new National League season now just two weeks away.

“I was pleased for the most part but the goals we conceded are a bit disappointing,” Hignett told Pools PlayerHD.

“Some of the attacking play and forward bits were really good even though we have to get a little bit better defensively so we'll be working on that.

“I'm buzzing for Luke Williams because it's been tough for him and he has been wanting to be involved and playing minutes.

“I just wanted him to be right before he played and you can see his quality – I mean, within the space of five minutes he was running the game really.

“I thought he would score with the early shot but his goal was a real piece of quality and that's what he gives you so I am really excited for the fans to see him play and delighted for him too.

“I also thought Kenton Richardson was outstanding – that was the best I have seen him play. He looks a real man, he's filled out a bit and it looks like he's got more aggression so I am pleased with him.

“We were playing a young team who kept on going and gave us some problems at times but it was a good workout for us and going forward it all looks really positive now.”
