Match Previews

Preview: Pools v Barnet

21 April 2017

We look ahead to Saturday's game with a full and in-depth preview of Barnet's visit to The Northern Gas and Power Stadium.

Hartlepool United v Barnet
Sky Bet League Two
Saturday 22nd April 2017
Kick-Off: 3pm

In Opposition
Barnet threatened to gate-crash the play-off places at the turn of the year when a run of six wins from eight moved them in to League Two’s top seven.

However, a dramatic dip in from after that which has seen them collect just two wins since cost boss Kevin Nugent his job last weekend, with Rossi Eames installed as caretaker for a second time.

His first game in charge on Easter Monday saw Wycombe Wanderers keep their own play-off hopes alive by inflicting The Bees’ fourth consecutive defeat and they’ll be hoping to restore some pride when they make the trip to the North-East on Saturday.

Star Man
John Akinde is the man Pools will most need to keep quiet this weekend – and if they do that, it will take them a long way towards a much-needed victory.

The powerful front man has been in ruthless form for much of the campaign and he is second in the League Two scorers’ charts with 24 goals to his name.

Signed from Alfreton in the summer of 2014, Akinde has now blasted 80 goals for The Bees in the three seasons since, leading to rumours of interest from clubs in higher divisions.

Last Meeting
Barnet 3 (Akinde pen 68, Gambin 76, Batt 79)
Pools 2 (Thomas 31, Amond 51)
Saturday 29th October 2016
Sky Bet League Two

Barnet: Vickers, Dembele, N’Gala, Nelson, Taylor (Akpa Akpro 61), Gambin, Kyei, Champion, Vilhete, Akinde, Tomlinson.
Subs not used: Stephens, Sesay, Muggleton, Nicholls.

Pools: Carson, Donnelly (s/o 68), Nsiala, Harrison, Carroll, Featherstone, Hawkins (Deverdics 86), Laurent, Thomas (Richards 76), Amond, Alessandra.
Subs not used: Bartlett, Martin, Woods, Orrell, Paynter.

Head To Head
Saturday’s game will be the 22nd competitive meeting between the two sides and both have won eight of the previous encounters with the five other games ending all-square.

The Bees came from 2-0 down to win 3-2 when the sides met at The Hive earlier this season to gain revenge for Pools’ 3-1 triumph there last term.

The last time Pools beat Barnet on home soil was back in December 2000 when a Craig Midgley hat-trick sent Chris Turner’s men on their way to a 6-1 victory.

Referee
Trevor Kettle may be a familiar name to Pools fans but he hasn’t officiated one of our games since February 2014 when he saw us beat Newport County 3-0 at The Vic.

In all he’s refereed nine Pools games and we’ve won on the last four occasions – including an FA Cup replay triumph at Vauxhall Motors in 2010 and a 2-0 victory at Swindon Town in 2009.

Kettle’s most recent assignment was on Easter Monday when he oversaw Oxford United’s 2-0 win over Port Vale at The Kassam Stadium.

We Have To Fight And Scrap - Jones

22 April 2017

Dave Jones has called on his players to show some fight in the final two games as they scrap for their League Two lives following defeat to Barnet on Saturday.

Pools fell in to the division’s bottom two following the 2-0 loss at The Northern Gas and Power Stadium as their battle for survival was taken out of their hands by Newport County’s win.

“You have to go out and show a bit of fight and determination but I think fear is creeping in,” Jones told Pools PlayerHD.

“We practice all week and it’s been a good week for everybody and we’ve worked hard – we wanted that week to just go one more day and I didn’t see it.

“It’s difficult to swallow because we put things in to practice and work in training but it doesn’t come off today and that’s got to be attitude at the end of the day, it can’t be anything else.

“Why they just relied on punting it, I don’t know. We’re shouting for them to squeeze it, get forward, get the ball in to people and go wide.

“You want to see that fight, certainly for the fans. Once the players cross the white line they have to show some gumption but you can see they are frightened.

“I have the fight in me, I don’t want to put my reputation on the line. I will fight and scrap anybody, that’s what I will do – but I want to see that from the players as well.”

Ticket Prices Cut For Saturday's Game

21 April 2017

We have slashed ticket prices for Saturday’s crunch game against Barnet to just £10 for adults and £5 for concessions so come along and support the lads this weekend.

With only three games left in the campaign, Pools need all the points they can get to ensure EFL safety and we’re asking for your help (again) on Saturday.

A result against Barnet could be absolutely crucial so we want as many people as possible to take advantage of the reduced ticket prices and rally behind the players.

Tickets are on sale now from The Northern Gas and Power Stadium Ticket Office, while fans can also make their orders online by clicking here.

Fans can also buy prior to kick-off on the day of the game from the Main Ticket Office or from one our Matchday Ticket Offices.
