Hartlepool United is pleased to confirm that terms have been agreed with Jack Hunter on a new contract ahead of the 2026/27 season, subject to the relevant approvals.
The agreement would keep the midfielder at the Prestige Group Stadium until June 2027, with the Club holding the option of a further year through to the summer of 2028.
Hunter becomes the latest player to commit his future to Pools as preparations continue to gather momentum ahead of the new campaign under newly appointed First Team Head Coach Lee Clark.
Since arriving at Hartlepool United in June 2024, the 28-year-old has established himself as one of the Club’s most reliable and consistent performers, making 64 appearances across all competitions.
Capable of operating both in midfield and at centre-back, Hunter has built a strong reputation across the National League and National League North for his professionalism, tactical intelligence, work ethic and ability to control games both in and out of possession.
Born in Newcastle upon Tyne, Hunter progressed through the Academy system at Newcastle United, where he featured prominently for the Club’s Under-23 side in Premier League 2 alongside a number of highly regarded young talents.
Following his departure from St James’ Park, Hunter moved into senior football with Gateshead and quickly adapted to the demands of the National League, later helping the Heed secure the National League North title in 2022 during a successful second spell at the Club.
After spells with Blyth Spartans and FC Halifax Town, Hunter established himself as one of the division’s most dependable midfield players during his time at The Shay, helping Halifax secure a play-off finish and lift the FA Trophy at Wembley Stadium in 2023.
Jack Hunter said: “I’m delighted to get everything sorted and stay at Pools.
“Growing up in the North East, you always know the size of Hartlepool United and how much it means to the supporters and local community.
“But you probably don’t fully appreciate it until you actually pull on the shirt and experience it for yourself because this is a massive club with a really passionate fanbase.
“The supporters have been brilliant with me since day one and I’ve loved my time here over the last two seasons.
“Obviously, as players, we all wish we’d achieved more during that period because the supporters deserve success, but there’s a real determination from everyone to improve and push things forward.
“I’ve had some really positive conversations with Lee Clark and Chris Maxwell since everything was agreed and you can already sense the standards and expectations they want throughout the group.
“The manager has spoken a lot about the mentality he wants within the squad and the direction he wants to take things and, as players, that’s exciting to hear.
“It’s still early days, but there’s definitely a good feeling around the place already and I can’t wait to get started again in pre-season.”
Lee Clark, First Team Head Coach at Hartlepool United, said “Jack is a player we were very keen to retain and I’m pleased we’ve agreed terms with him.
“He already understands the expectations and responsibility that come with representing this football club and he brings a lot of valuable qualities both on and off the pitch.
“His experience, consistency and attitude make him a very important player for us heading into the new season.
“From the conversations I’ve had with Jack since coming into the Club, it’s clear he’s fully committed and eager to be part of what we’re putting together here.
“He’s someone with a very good understanding of the game and the type of character and mentality we want within the squad.
“As we continue shaping the group ahead of the new campaign, retaining players with the right professionalism, standards and desire to improve is hugely important.
“We want a squad supporters can identify with, a team that competes, works hard for one another and represents this football club in the right way. Jack will be an important part of that.”
Chris Maxwell, Head of Football Operations at Bromby & Partners, said: “Jack has been an important player for Hartlepool United over the last two seasons and retaining players with his experience, mentality and understanding of what’s required here is a key part of the work taking place ahead of the new campaign.
“He brings consistency, professionalism and leadership within the dressing room and those qualities are hugely valuable when you’re trying to create a competitive environment.
“There’s been a huge amount of work taking place behind the scenes as we continue shaping the First Team squad ahead of the new season.
“A major focus has been ensuring every decision we make, whether that’s new signings, contract renewals or additions to the coaching staff, aligns with the style of play, character and identity we want this team to reflect moving forward.
“There’s still a lot of work ahead, but we’re beginning to build real momentum and putting strong foundations in place to help the Club compete strongly next season.
“Players like Jack are important because they understand the expectations that come with representing Pools and help drive the professionalism and mentality required across the group every day.”
