Five memorable meetings against York City

Ahead of Saturday’s National League fixture between Hartlepool United and York City at the Prestige Group Stadium, we pick out five memorable meetings between the two sides in the history books.

Having first faced York in 1930, Pools have played 129 times against the Minstermen, recording 44 wins while drawing 30 times.

Below, we go through the archives to pick out five of the most important meetings between the two sides.

First Meeting

Pools 3-1 York City, 2nd April 1930

You would have to back 95 years ago to find our first meeting with the Minstermen. Pools would be victorious in this meeting, with goals from Albert Pape, Frank Barson and Jimmy Thompson.

Bill Norman was in the dugout for Pools, who were then under the guise of Hartlepools United.

A double from Andy Toman and a goal from Paul Baker secured a third-round spot for Pools after beating York 3-1 in the second round replay.

Pools would go on to play Luton Town in the third round, and that is where they would exit the competition.

League Two Victory

Pools 2-1 York City, 16th April 2016

The last time Pools faced the Minstermen in the Football League was back in 2016.

Craig Hignett’s side would come out victorious winning 2-1, helped with goals from Nathan Thomas and Michael Woods.

That would be the last time Pools faced York City in the Football League, as the Minstermen would be relegated to the National League that same season.

Magic from Mani

Eighteen minutes from full time, the two sides were deadlocked at the Prestige Group stadium.

With the game petering out, up stepped Mani Dieseruvwe who stole the headlines with a late brace. An 87th minute penalty claimed all three points for Pools; a win that would end York City’s eight-game unbeaten league run.
