First words: Neo Eccleston

New Hartlepool United defender Neo Eccleston says he is ready to embrace a fresh challenge at Victoria Park after becoming the latest addition to Lee Clark’s squad ahead of the 2026/27 National League campaign.

The 22-year-old arrives at Pools following the expiry of his contract with Huddersfield Town, bringing more than 30 senior appearances and valuable Football League experience after spells with Barrow and Grimsby Town.

Speaking for the first time after putting pen to paper, Eccleston admitted the opportunity to join Hartlepool was one he couldn’t ignore.

“I’m excited,” he smiled.

“It’s a new challenge and a new league for me because I haven’t played in the National League before. I just want to come here, show my creative side and do what I have to do for Hartlepool.”

Although the move presented a fresh opportunity, Eccleston revealed there was already a familiar face at the Club who helped convince him that Victoria Park was the right place to continue his development.

“I spoke to Chris Maxwell because we used to play together,” he explained.

“He called me straight away and told me about the club, the ideas they have and what they’re trying to do here.

“I thought about it for a couple of days and it just felt like the right move. I’m coming to a place where I know people and trust them, and it looked like a really good place to come.”

Those conversations extended beyond Chris Maxwell, with First Team Head Coach Lee Clark outlining the Club’s ambitions for the season ahead.

“Everyone at the club is pushing for the same thing,” Eccleston said.

“Everyone wants to get promotion, build the club and make Hartlepool a place that’s known for being successful. That’s what we’re all working towards.”

Comfortable at right-back or further forward on the right-hand side, Eccleston believes his energetic style of play is something supporters will quickly recognise.

“I’d say I’m a very attacking defender,” he said.

“If I’m not having my best game defensively, I’ll make sure I contribute going forward. If I’m not doing as much going forward, I’ll make sure I have a solid game defensively.

“I always want to contribute to the team in one way or another.”

Despite still being only 22, Eccleston has already enjoyed valuable experience in senior football after progressing through the academies at Chelsea and Huddersfield Town before gaining regular minutes in League One and League Two.

“I’ve had a good amount of games in League Two with Barrow and then played in League One as well,” he reflected.

“It’s been a good experience so far, but now I just want to keep playing more games and continue improving.”

Now settled into pre-season with his new teammates, Eccleston is looking forward to pulling on the blue and white in front of the Victoria Park faithful for the first time.

“I’m really excited,” he added.

“I’ve heard the fans get right behind the team, whether we’re winning or losing. It’s a really committed town and I can’t wait to experience that and give everything for the supporters.”
