First Words: Max Merrick

New Hartlepool United goalkeeper Max Merrick says he is determined to make an impact at Victoria Park after making the loan switch from Chelsea.

The 20-year-old, who has already made 47 appearances for Chelsea’s Under-21s, has joined Lee Clark’s side on a season-long loan – and the ‘keeper is ready for Enterprise National League action.

Merrick said: “It’s a really good feeling to join.

“I’m really excited to get started.

“It’s a massive club and I’m excited for the season.

“I’m looking forward to getting started with Hartlepool.”

As well as being an England Under-20 international, Merrick was influential in winning the League Phase of the Premier League 2 for Chelsea’s Under-21 side last season – but the ‘keeper is ready to step back into senior men’s football.

“I’ve been at Chelsea since I was 13, and I’ve had a couple of experiences of the National League South, which has been really good for my development,” the 20-year-old continued.

“Last season, I played with the Under-21s, and I had some Champions League experience, which was really good.

“However, it’ll be good to get back to playing men’s football again.

“It’s so different to playing Under-21 football – but it’s going to be such a valuable experience and step in my career.”

To add to his youth and international experience, Merrick can also call upon his European experience with Chelsea.

The ‘keeper has been a part of seven Champions League and two Europa Conference League matchday squads over the past two seasons – experiences Merrick is keen to use at Pools.

He added: “It’s really good to be around groups like that.

“Obviously, you see the preparation that goes into it – and being around that atmosphere is massive.

“It’s put me in good stead to play for Hartlepool.

“It’s going to be an exciting season – and I’m going to take things I’ve learnt at Chelsea and bring them here.”

For Merrick, though, the main goal at Hartlepool United is simple.

“My goal, like anyone, is to be the best goalkeeper in the league,” the 20-year-old said.

“I just want to be the best I can for Hartlepool and perform at the top level.

“There’s a lot of admiration from the club of where we want to go.

“I’m just really excited to get started.”
