First words: Chris Popov

Chris Popov admits Hartlepool United’s ambition and vision made the decision to join the Club an easy one as he looks forward to the next stage of his career.

The 21-year-old forward arrives at Victoria Park on a two-year deal following the expiry of his contract with Leicester City, after impressing during a productive loan spell with Morecambe in the second half of last season.

Popov scored seven goals and provided four assists in 18 National League appearances for the Shrimps and now arrives at Pools determined to build on that breakthrough campaign.

Speaking for the first time after putting pen to paper, the Wales Under-21 international couldn’t hide his excitement.

“I’m excited to be here.

“I spoke with the gaffer and his staff and I was really, really excited by what they had to say. I wanted to be a part of it, so I’m delighted to be here, ready to work hard and kick on.”

Although still only 21, Popov has already gained valuable senior experience through spells at Barrow and Morecambe, experiences he believes have helped prepare him for the challenge ahead.

“It’s been really good.

“Obviously the last part of the season at Morecambe was really positive on a personal level. I scored some goals and put in some decent performances.

“But that’s only the start. I want to keep improving, keep pushing on and hopefully play the best football of my career.”

The move also reunites Popov with fellow summer signing Jack Nolan, with the pair enjoying an excellent understanding during their time together at Morecambe.

“Yeah, we played together quite a lot last season and I really enjoyed it.

“Hopefully that can continue here.”

Pools supporters can also expect an energetic and hardworking attacking player when Popov pulls on the blue shirt for the first time.

“I’d say my game is about energy.

“I want to score goals, be direct and always make myself a nuisance for defenders.

“I’ll run as hard as I can and I’ll give 100 per cent every single game.”

The conversations with Lee Clark and the coaching staff played a huge part in convincing Popov that Hartlepool United was the right place to continue his development.

“They spoke about progressing as a football club.

“It’s a big club with really good fans and we want to finish as high as possible.

“We’ll work hard every day in training and hopefully that leads to winning games on Saturdays.”

Having visited Victoria Park for the first time, Popov is now counting down the days until he experiences the famous atmosphere on a matchday.

“I’m very excited.

“This is my first time here and it’s a beautiful ground.

“I’m sure it’ll be even better when it’s full of fans and I can’t wait to get out there and play in front of them.”
