Benn: “I’ll be well up for the game.”

Hartlepool United defender Jay BennĀ believes his side can bounce backĀ fromĀ defeat against Sutton United when they face FC Halifax Town on Saturday at the Prestige Group Stadium.Ā

Benn began his career at the Shaymen, who currently sit one league position above Pools in the race for a play-off spot. Ahead of the clash, the defender told local press:Ā ā€œWe know what Halifax bring,Ā they’reĀ a strong side, willing runners.

ā€œWe know what threat they pose. As we did at their place,Ā we’llĀ stick to the game plan.

ā€œ[It’s] my old club,Ā I’llĀ be well up for the game. These games are what you live for as a playerĀ –Ā it’sĀ directĀ competitionĀ for the play-offs. We want to win,Ā asĀ will they, so it will be a good game.ā€

AfterĀ a 2-0Ā lossĀ against the Us on Tuesday night,Ā BennĀ insisted thatĀ PoolsĀ do notĀ want the season to ā€œfizzle outā€.

ā€œIf you look back, we’ve missed big chances at key times in the game, which would’veĀ given us something to hold ontoā€,Ā the defender said.

ā€œWe’veĀ conceded from a controllable in a set-piece, so it hurts andĀ it’sĀ a frustrating one. I thinkĀ we’veĀ got to react better to going 1-0 down.Ā We’veĀ just got to look back at it and fix what happened.

ā€œAt the business end of the season, every game is a must-winĀ –Ā especially with the situationĀ we’reĀ in, chasing the likes of Southend.

ā€œComing into the last games,Ā we’veĀ got teams [to play] around usĀ and above us, and I still thinkĀ it’sĀ in our hands.Ā We’veĀ got to do what we can control.ā€

TheĀ right-backĀ has beenĀ a main feature for Pools this campaignĀ –Ā starting in all but two matches since early September, and more recently showing his versatility atĀ rightĀ wing-back and left-back.

ā€œI’mĀ glad to be playing regularly and getting minutesā€, Benn added.

“I’veĀ got things to improve as well, butĀ I’mĀ happy with my game time and whereĀ we’reĀ at.Ā I’llĀ play wherever the gaffer puts me.

ā€œThe fans have been great with me all year. Especially whenĀ you’reĀ playingĀ on their side, you do get a feel, and they give you a buzz.Ā They can give you that extra yard inĀ games, definitely.ā€
