Academy claim vital win over Grimsby Town

Pools Academy claimed a much-needed win over Grimsby Town on Saturday morning, with first-team boss Anthony Limbrick in attendance.

Kian Foreman’s goal in the first half was enough for Alex Cross and Graeme Clark’s side to secure all three points, with the team showing resolute defending throughout.

Pools started the game well with opportunities falling to Ewan Purdy, Joel Ingram and Jacob Penprase.

The goal eventually came around the half-hour mark.

Ashton Wood played a neat ball into Penprase, who showed good awareness to slide into Foreman’s path for a neat finish in front of goal.

Ben Taylor, making his debut in between the sticks for the suspended Harry Conyard, made a smart stop down to his left as Pools went into the break ahead.

A second nearly came as Alex Pavan was kept out after an incredible save from Grimsby’s keeper minutes into the second half, while a trialist hit the crossbar from a corner.

Grimsby found it difficult to break through the Pools defence and the hosts were able to celebrate a vital win at the full time whistle.

“We’re really pleased,” stated Alex Cross at full time.

“The players backed up last week’s performance against Doncaster and went one better this week against a good Grimsby side.

“We were resilient throughout, determined to keep a clean sheet and ruthless in both boxes.

“The majority of the side are still 16/17 years old, they have exciting futures ahead and are constantly going in the right direction.”

Pools Academy turn their attention to Carlisle United on Tuesday, travelling to the North West in a rearranged fixture.
