Hartlepool United Academy claimed a 1-1 draw away to Morecambe to open the EFL Youth Alliance season, with Ollie Duthie sensationally getting on the scoresheet.
The Pools team, which included a host of new first-years, went behind on the 20 minute mark as Andy Evans tapped home a rebound at close-range for Morecambe.
But on the stroke of half-time, Pools right-back Duthie took matters into his own hands when he drove forward and unleashed a curling strike into the bottom corner from 20 yards.
Pools created a number of chances throughout the second half, but Ian McGuckin’s side were forced to settle for a point in Lancashire on the opening day.
“It was a really competitive first game of the season,” reflected Academy Manager, McGuckin.
“We had the larger share of possession and created a few half-chances but were unable to make the breakthrough. Morecambe went ahead against the run of play, we didn’t deal with a wide free-kick which resulted in their striker bundling the ball in after a decent save from Ash Green.
“The goal didn’t affect us as we continued to push and the breakthrough came just before half-time when a switch of play came to Ollie. It was a fantastic goal which left the goalkeeper with no chance – a goal we definitely deserved.
“We had three really good opportunities in the second half, but our defence also stayed solid with a number of blocks in the closing stages. It’s a good point on the road and a platform for us to build off for the rest of the season.”
