Hartlepool’s “Place Partnership” initiative is about increasing people’s level of physical activity and reducing physical inactivity amongst all ages and abilities. Funding for the work is coming from Sport England and many local voluntary organisations. Hartlepool Borough Council and Tees Valley Sport are working together in this effort to get people moving and more active.
Poolies Kicks Football Project is a diversionary sports provision which has been targeted in the Manor Ward based at Brierton Sports Centre astroturf pitch in Hartlepool. The community-based sessions will use the medium of football to run informal turn-up-and-play sessions between 5-6pm for 8 to 11-years and 6-7pm for 12 to 15-year-old boys and girls. The sessions are one hour each and will run every Friday evening.
Our project will use the power of sport to engage with young people, with the activities helping improve physical, mental health and wellbeing, as well as improving self-confidence and team building. It also provides a safe secure play environment for young people to mix in the local area.
Through our insights, it has been highlighted that the young people are bored with nothing to do, and this can result in anti-social behaviour and damage in the Manor Ward, which is a deprived area, where lots of families cannot afford the price of some activities and are unable to travel to other areas.
We will also work together with the local police and community, which will help to break down barriers with young people who are causing trouble in the area.
