Popov thrilled to return to winning ways

Hartlepool United forward Chris Popov expressed the “amazing” feeling of scoring his first goal for the Club, which secured his side a 1-0 victory over Woking in the National League.

Popov’s close-range finish on 57 minutes ended Pools’ three-game losing streak in the league and earned Lee Clark’s side a second home victory of the season.

The forward was a constant threat for the Woking backline, seeing a low shot deflect inches wide before teeing up Will Harris, who headed just off target late in the first half.

After going close twice early in the second period, Popov got his goal as Pools bounced back from a midweek loss to FC Halifax Town.

It was a good win; it was a good performance too, and I’m delighted to get my first goal for the Club,” the forward said.

It was amazing; the fans have been great since the start of the season, and we’re delighted as a group to give them a win today.

“Working hard, grafting, sticking together, we’ve all done that. It’s very important. We’ve just got to keep our heads down and keep going.”

Popov opened up on his time in the North East since signing for Pools in the summer, adding:I’m loving it. Obviously coming into a new group, the lads have really helped me out.

“Today was even better – getting a win, getting a goal, and I’m sure there will be many more good memories.”
