Competitive football returns to Victoria Park on Saturday afternoon as Hartlepool United begin the 2026/27 National League season against Barrow.

The opening weekend marks the start of a new chapter for the Club following one of the busiest summers in recent years.

Since Lee Clark was appointed First Team Head Coach in May, preparations have focused on shaping a squad ready for the demands of the National League, with a refreshed coaching team, thirteen new signings and an encouraging pre-season programme all helping to build optimism ahead of the new campaign.

A Summer of Change

Working alongside Assistant Head Coach Adam Clayton, First Team Coach Gary Liddle and Player/Goalkeeping Coach Adam Smith, Clark has used pre-season to get his ideas across, integrate the Club’s new arrivals and prepare the squad for the physical and tactical demands of the season ahead.

Every training session and every fixture has provided another opportunity to build understanding, strengthen partnerships and establish the standards the coaching staff expect throughout the campaign.

Recruitment has strengthened every area of the squad. Goalkeepers Max Merrick and Nathan Fisher have added further competition between the posts, while Cameron John, Charlie Penman and Neo Eccleston have bolstered the defensive options.

Jack Nolan, Corey McKeown, Terry Bondo, Owen Hampson and Brooklyn Ilunga have increased competition across midfield, with Jordan Hugill, Chris Popov and Will Harris providing further quality in the final third.

Encouraging Signs

Preparations offered plenty of encouragement as Pools won five of their six pre-season fixtures, opening the summer with victories over Seaton Carew, Redcar Athletic, Spennymoor Town and Hebburn Town before facing League Two opposition in Grimsby Town and Fleetwood Town. The campaign concluded with a 1-0 victory over Fleetwood at Victoria Park, where Corey McKeown’s 89th-minute winner ensured preparations ended on a positive note.

There were encouraging performances throughout the programme. Chris Popov finished a with three goals, while Jack Nolan impressed with a brace against Spennymoor Town. Further goals came from Will Harris, Terry Bondo, Max Kouogun, Josh Donaldson, Neo Eccleston, Luke Charman and McKeown, while valuable minutes across the squad allowed new partnerships to develop ahead of the opening weekend.

The First Test 

Barrow provide the first challenge of the new campaign after returning to the National League following relegation from League Two at the end of last season. The Bluebirds begin a new era under manager Adam Murray and arrive at Victoria Park looking to make a positive start, ensuring an intriguing opening fixture for both clubs.

Back at The Vic

Saturday will also provide many of Pool’s summer signings with their first competitive experience of Victoria Park.

For supporters, it is the first opportunity to see a new-look side in league action, while for the players it marks the beginning of a campaign built on the work of the last three months and the chance to make an immediate impression in front of the Pools faithful.

“You can do all the work you want during pre-season, but everyone knows the real business starts when the league campaign begins. We’ve had six productive weeks on the training pitch, the players have applied themselves brilliantly and we’ve seen the group develop with every game we’ve played.

“Barrow will provide a tough opening test. They’ve got good players, they’ll be coming here with confidence and we’ll have to be ready from the first whistle. That’s exactly the type of challenge you expect on the opening day of the season.

The Manager – Adam Murray

Adam Murray was appointed Barrow manager in May after guiding Kidderminster Harriers to promotion back to the National League. He signed a contract until the summer of 2028 and now begins his first full campaign at Holker Street, tasked with leading the Bluebirds following their relegation from League Two.

One to Watch – Ben Whitfield

The experienced forward remains an important attacking player for Barrow. Comfortable playing across the front line, his pace, creativity and Football League experience make him a player Pools will need to keep a close eye on.

Barrow are celebrating their 125th anniversary during the 2026/27 season. Founded in 1901, the Bluebirds ended a 48-year absence from the Football League by winning the National League title in 2019/20 and return to the National League this season after six consecutive campaigns in League Two.
