Hartlepool United is delighted to confirm the appointment of Danny Nye as the Club’s new Head of Performance & Sports Science.
Nye arrives at Victoria Park following a career across professional football and elite performance sport, most recently serving as Head of Performance at League One side Barnsley during the 2025/26 season.
His appointment continues the transformation of Hartlepool United’s football department as the Club further strengthens the expertise and support surrounding the first-team environment ahead of the 2026/27 National League campaign.
As Head of Performance & Sports Science, Nye will work closely with First Team Head Coach Lee Clark, his coaching staff and the Club’s medical team to lead the Club’s performance programme, integrating sports science and strength and conditioning to support player preparation, recovery and long-term availability throughout the season.
His role will focus on ensuring players are physically prepared to meet the demands of training and matches while using performance data and sports science to support the coaching staff.
During his time at Barnsley, Nye led the Club’s first-team physical performance programme, overseeing player preparation, workload management, performance monitoring and return-to-play processes across the season.
Prior to joining Barnsley, Nye built extensive experience across professional football and elite performance sport, working in strength and conditioning, sports science and athlete development roles with Ipswich Town, the University of Stirling, Heart of Midlothian Women and British Weight Lifting’s elite performance pathway.

“When I sat down with Chris Maxwell to discuss the role, what stood out straight away was the amount of thought that had gone into developing the football department and the ambition behind what the Club is trying to build. It wasn’t just about the season ahead. It was about putting the right people, expertise and support around the players to help drive the Football Club forward over the long term.
“For me, performance is about helping players give their best as often as possible. Every player is different, so it’s about understanding what each individual needs, helping them prepare properly, recover well and giving them the best opportunity to stay fit, train consistently and perform at their highest level throughout the season.
“I’m excited to start working with Lee, his coaching staff and the players every day. If we can keep players available, support their development and create an environment where they can perform consistently, we’ll give the team the strongest possible platform to be successful.”
Nye becomes the latest addition to Lee Clark’s new-look football department, joining Assistant First Team Head Coach Adam Clayton, First Team Coach Gary Liddle, Player/Goalkeeping Coach Adam Smith and Head of Recruitment Chris Beech.
His appointment continues the work undertaken this summer to strengthen every area of the football operation ahead of the 2026/27 National League campaign.

Nye succeeds Jake Lloyd, who has departed the Club after accepting a role with Championship side Lincoln City. The Club thanks Jake for his professionalism and contribution during his time at Victoria Park and wishes him every success for the future..
