Women | Zara Johnston Hat-Trick in First Pre-Season Fixture Against Rivals Darlington

Hartlepool United Women kicked off pre-season with a convincing display in their first run-out, overcoming local rivals Darlington.

Pools started on the front foot and took the lead inside the opening minute, with Poppy Todd calmly slotting home after a sharp attacking move.

The early goal set the tone as Pools dominated the midfield battle, dictating the tempo of the game.

Their pressure was rewarded in the 15th minute when Zara Johnston grabbed the first of her three goals, finishing confidently after some slick interlinking play.

Zara doubled her tally before half-time, latching onto a perfectly weighted through ball from Liv Bell, surging past the Darlington defence, and lifting the ball over the onrushing keeper.

It was a fitting way to round off an excellent first-half performance from the home side.

The second half began in the same fashion, with Pools striking again on the 50-minute mark.

New signing Grace Raw timed her run perfectly to meet a cross from Zara, finishing from close range.

Moments later, Grace was brought down in the box after another driving run, but Zara fired the resulting spot-kick over the bar.

Darlington grew into the game, enjoying more possession and causing Pools some problems.

Their persistence paid off with two goals in quick succession, narrowing the scoreline and setting up a competitive finish.

But Zara wasn’t done yet. As the game stretched, she found space inside the 18-yard box to complete her hat-trick, sealing an impressive opening win against a Darlington side that had only been beaten once in pre-season.

Coach’s Thoughts

“This evening we started the game very well.

“You could see the style of play we want to develop for the season ahead, and for the first hour, we were very impressive.

“There’s still plenty of room for improvement—we know that.

“Some of our decision-making and tactical discipline faded as our legs got heavier, but for a first game back, I’m happy with the squad’s efforts.”
