Horwood reflects on progress since taking over Women’s side

Gareth Horwood, Head Coach of Hartlepool United Women, has been pleased with the strides his side have made over the last two months.

Horwood was appointed as Head Coach on January 15 and, alongside Andy Stuart, has constructed an impressive upturn in form.

Pools Women have won three and drawn one in Horwood’s first six games, with the two defeats coming very narrowly.

He has reflected on the last two months positively, crediting his squad for their effort and intensity.

“It’s been a great start for myself,” he stated.

“Before the Gateshead game on Sunday, we had a few weeks without a game, which allowed us to reflect on our progress and the strides we’ve made.

“The players have made my transition into the role incredibly smooth, fully embracing the ideas introduced in training.

“Our focus has been on fostering a positive culture and developing a playing style that suits the squad’s strengths. A slight tactical adjustment, along with a clearer understanding of individual roles and responsibilities, has made us more effective on matchdays.

“However, what has impressed me most is the intensity in training. The competition for places is high, and every player understands that earning a spot in the matchday squad starts with commitment on the training field.

“The attitude and dedication shown so far gives us confidence that this will translate into positive results.

“In the short term, our goal is to build on recent performances, pick up as many points as possible, and secure safety. Ideally, we’re aiming for a mid-table finish, which is well within reach given the talent in the squad.

“Every player understands the privilege of representing Hartlepool United. We are all committed to giving our best for the Club and helping to promote the women’s game in our town.

“As a team, we must continue to develop, turn strong performances into consistent results, and make our presence felt.

“Ultimately, we want this group of players to inspire the next generation – to show young girls in our community that they too can dream of playing for this great club.”
