Pools Academy return with a win

Hartlepool United Academy returned to winning ways last weekend, earning a 4-0 home victory over Shrewsbury Town in the EFL Youth Alliance.

Ian McGuckin’s came out all guns blazing and created a number of chances at Blackhall.

Alfie Steel bagged a brace, with the striker converting from the spot alongside a guided header.

Bernardo Araujo and Ashton Wood also got on the scoresheet as Pools’ second-string marked their first fixture in three weeks with a win.

Youth team coach, Graeme Clarke, expressed his delight at the full time whistle.

“After our poor performance and disappointing exit from the FA Youth Cup, the boys were determined to make amends,” he stated.

“The group worked hard during the week in training and transferred that attitude and application into the game, producing a great performance.

“Shrewsbury struggled to match us. The 4-0 scoreline was convincing and well deserved, with the most pleasing thing keeping a clean sheet.

“We’re pleased and proud of the players. Hopefully we can kick on and go on a run now, we’ve got some tough tests coming up.”
