Pools Women suffer defeat to Darlington in pre-season

An action-packed first half saw Darlington defeat Hartlepool United Women at Metcalfe Park on Thursday night in friendly action.

The Quakers took the lead after just three minutes when Hattie Raine’s free-kick caught the hosts out.

Libbie Trainor equalised for Pools on the 15 minute mark with a clinical finish, however Lily Wilkinson regained Darlington’s lead moments later.

Pools created several chances in the second period but were unable to find a breakthrough as Darlington ran out 2-1 winners.

“Thursday’s game brought a lot of positives with it,” assessed Pools Women boss Alex Curl.

“It was the best performance of pre-season so far in regards to our possession. Some of the football on display from the players was exceptional, especially considering the conditions.

“In the first half, there were a lot of strong individual performances but it was clear to see the squad are still gelling together. We entered the break a goal down with a couple of easily rectifiable goals conceded.

“It was nice to see Libbie on the scoresheet again, it’s becoming quite the habit for her. The intensity could have fell away in the second half with only 12 players available, but it was in this half where we really took control and pushed the Darlington goalkeeper into some great saves.

“In the end, the players deserved to grab at least an equaliser but with the match cut short due to an injury, we fell just short.

“Congratulations to Darlington on their performance and I wish them the best of luck for the season. We also send our best wishes to the opposition’s injured player and hope she has a speedy recovery.”

Hartlepool United Women are next in action on Sunday 18th August with a home friendly against Birtley Town. Kick-off will take place at 2pm at Metcalfe Park.
