We’re Starting To Believe – Keena

Aidan Keena and Mark Kitching celebrate Hartlepool United's National League win at Solihull Moors

Goal hero Aidan Keena says Hartlepool United are “starting to believe” as they close in on the National League’s top seven.

Keena grabbed the 86th-minute winner at Solihull Moors where the 1-0 victory moved Pools up to eighth.

Only goal difference keeps Dave Challinor’s team out of the play-off positions – their tally of 54 points sees them on the same mark as Solihull and Notts County, though the Magpies have two games in hand.

“You can definitely sense something is changing,” said the Irishman, who tucked away his goal superbly from Macauley Southam-Hales’ inviting cross.

“We are starting to believe and the gaffer is putting us through a lot of hard work to keep us focused.

“This can be the start of a good run for us.

“We are putting the gaffer’s plans into place, forward runs, forward balls and Macca has got forward and we’ve got the goal.

“With that win and the results we’ve had lately there is a lot to build on.”

It was the former Hearts striker’s second Pools goal since his move from the Scottish Premiership and it could yet prove critical in the promotion race.

And it might just have earned him a shot at a starting spot in the home date with Ebbsfleet United at Victoria Park this Saturday.

“Whether I’m on for 90 minutes or five I always feel as though I can score,” he said.

“I’ve just been unlucky that Rob (Harker) has been doing well lately, he has warranted his start.

“I’m not saying I am happy to be on the bench to come on and do that tonight is not the worst thing.”

While Keena was able to re-live his first away Pools goal, the man who set it up missed the end of the match after suffering a head injury, Southam-Hales was taken off after being involved in a collision at the start of stoppage time.

Keena paid tribute to the on-loan right-back for his good work down the right.

“I was just trying to catch up with him,” laughed Keena.

“Macca says he doesn’t remember it, but I’ll keep reminding him!”
