We Missed A Big Opportunity – Challinor

Dave Challinor, Woking v Hartlepool United

Dave Challinor said his players must learn from defeat at Woking on Saturday after missing the chance to close the gap on the top seven despite taking the lead.

Pools went in front midway through the first half when Luke James was brought down in the box and Gime Toure swept home the resultant penalty.

However, the hosts came out fighting in the final half hour and plundered an equaliser through top scorer Jake Hyde before Dave Tarpet curled home a wonderful winner twelve minutes from time.

“It was really frustrating and we’ve let an opportunity pass us by,” he told Pools TV.

“To perform as well as we did for 60 or 65 minutes and then have the game taken away from us or throw it away is really, really disappointing.

“There are loads of positives from the first part of the game but, ultimately, the game is 90 minutes and it was difficult to go in there afterwards and not be angry – because I am.

“It was a tight game and one of few chances but we looked a threat and had a couple of opportunities at the start of the second half and you want to go and get that second goal.

“The first goal is disappointing from a long throw but we had to defend a few of those situations, probably down to not being aggressive enough in the middle of the pitch.

“But a player can’t turn in our six-yard box and score. Then for the second goal it was a great finish but should he be allowed to travel that far with the ball without us trying to affect the play?

“It’s possibly harsh to be too critical but we have to be because they need to learn from that if we’re going to achieve anything this season.”
