We Earned The Victory – Hawkes

Josh Hawkes, Hartlepool United v Exeter City

Josh Hawkes has insisted Pools deserved their FA Cup replay win over Exeter City and laughed off suggestions that his winning goal was meant to be a cross.

The Pools midfield star struck the decisive blow three minutes in to extra-time to hand Dave Challinor’s men a 1-0 victory and set-up a Third Round visit to Oxford United in the New Year.

“I think we fully deserved the win,” Hawkes told Pools TV.

“We tried to use the fact they had a long journey back to try and press them high up the pitch and we got a good result in the end.

“The conditions were tough with the wind blowing all over and it was quite a tight affair but we battled through it and got the win.

“I’ve just tried to shoot across the keeper – a lot of the lads are trying to say it was a cross but what are they like?

“It sat up nice and it came off my foot cleanly and as soon as I have looked up it was going in to the top corner – it’s been a while since I scored at home so I’m really happy.”
