Pools pulled off a fantastic bit of summer transfer business when attacking star Ryan Donaldson signed on the dotted line after his departure from Plymouth Argyle.
The former Newcastle United star had made 33 appearances for the promoted Pilgrims during 2016/17 and Pools boss Craig Harrison moved quickly to acquire his services once he was freed from Home Park.
Newcastle-born Donaldson came through the ranks with his hometown club and gained experience with a two-month loan spell at Pools in 2011/12, during which he made 12 appearances for the Club.
After a handful of senior outings for The Magpies, Donaldson was allowed to move on and made his name at Gateshead where he scored eight times in the National League during 2012/13.
That form caught the eye of Cambridge United who took the Tynesider in the summer of 2013 – it proved an inspired signing as Donaldson starred in The U’s return to the Football League, including scoring the Wembley winner in the Play-Off Final which secured their promotion.
He became a near ever-present for them in League Two in the following campaign, scoring seven goals in total – one of them against Pools.
However, now he will be looking to put the ball in the net for the Club after Pools beat off the attention of several other clubs to land his signature.
His debut season was interrupted by an ankle injury which required two operations and kept him out for six months but he returned to fitness for the latter part of the campaign and will hope to play much more during 2018/19.
