The central defender became Pools’ seventh signing of the 2017 summer when he arrived at the Club following his departure from Inverness Caledonian Thistle.

A former Sunderland youngster, Laing came through the ranks at the Stadium of Light and made one appearance for the Black Cats, whilst also gaining senior experience with a loan spell at Wycombe Wanderers.

He moved on to Nottingham Forest in the summer of 2014 and spent a season at The City Ground during which he was allowed to play on loan for both Notts County and Motherwell before making a permanent move to the latter in 2015.

The former England youth international returned to Notts County on loan at the start of the 2016/17 campaign and scored against Pools and then set up the winner as The Magpies triumphed 2-1 at Victoria Park.

In February 2017 he signed a short-term deal with Inverness but the lure of a return to his native North East proved too much to turn down and he put pen to paper on a move to Pools in July.
