Hartlepool United v Wrexham
National League
Monday 26th August 2019, 3pm
Victoria Park

In Opposition

Wrexham have made a solid start to the new National League campaign and lie just outside the play-off places ahead of their visit to Victoria Park on Monday.

The Dragons fell at the play-off hurdle last season after finishing fourth but there is huge optimism around in North Wales that this is the year they will reclaim their EFL place after a twelve-year absence.

Boss Bryan Hughes has made adding goals to his squad a summer priority and he’s done some strong business in the transfer market, bringing in exciting signings like JJ Hooper and Devonte Redmond.

They’ve lost just once in their opening six games of the season and dropped their first points of the season on home soil on Saturday when Barnet held them to a 1-1 draw at The Racecourse.

One To Watch

JJ Hooper is the man charged with the responsibility of firing the goals that will help Wrexham challenge for promotion from the National League this term.

The former Newcastle United striker was drafted in from Grimsby Town during the summer and has already struck two goals, including one in Saturday’s draw with Barnet.

The 25-year-old is proven at this level having enjoyed a particularly prolific spell on loan with Bromley in the second half of last term and will be hoping to be just as successful with Wrexham.

Head To Head

Monday’s game will be our 108th competitive meeting with Wrexham – of all the teams in the National League this term there is only FC Halifax Town and Stockport County that we’ve faced more.

Wrexham hold the advantage historically having won 49 of the previous 107 encounters in comparison to Pools’ 40 triumphs, while 18 fixtures have ended in draws.

Last season’s game both went 1-0 with home advantage, though Wrexham did win 2-0 at The Vic back in January 2018.

On The Whistle

Pools have been refereed twice previously by David Richardson, the man who will be in the middle for our Bank Holiday Monday meeting with Wrexham.

It was at the end of 2018 when he last took charge of a fixture involving Pools, overseeing our 1-1 draw against Chesterfield at The Proact Stadium.

Prior to that, Richardson was also on the whistle for our 2-1 defeat to Maidenhead United at Victoria Park in December 2017.
