Luke James and Niko Muir were both on target but a Pools XI fell to a 5-2 behind-closed-doors defeat against Sunderland at The Academy of Light on Monday afternoon.
The Black Cats raced in to a two-goal lead in the game before James was set away by a pass from Liam Noble and he wriggled his way in to the box before finding space to fire home.
It was all-square when Muir pounced on a moment of hesitation at the back from the hosts and he produced a clinical finish low in to the bottom corner of the net.
With the scores level, Pools fancied their chances to going on to win but it was the home side who found the greater cutting edge in the closing stages to score three times and take the victory.
