Match Report: Pools defeated at Fylde

9 January 2024

Hartlepool United missed the chance to return to the top half of the National League after going down 2-1 at Fylde.

Pools conceded twice to the relegation-threatened Coasters in the first 20 minutes and, despite a beautiful goal from sub Jake Hastie in the second half, they left Mill Farm empty handed.

Caretaker manager Lennie Lawrence took an unchanged Pools side to the Lancashire coast rowing that a win would lift them up to 12th in the table.

There was some early promise as Callum Cooke had a shot blocked and then went over the bar from a corner.

But there was a let off for Pools when Fylde captain Harry Davis tapped in but home celebrations were premature with referee Michael Crusham instead awarding the visitors a free-kick.

However, Fylde were not to be denied when they took a 17th-minute lead with a fine strike by Nick Haughton into Joel Dixon’s top corner.

Fylde were a danger when Jonathan Ustabasi was on the ball and he was the man who set up the second home goal in the 21st minute.

His ball was driven low into the box where Manny Onariase tried to make the block but only succeeded in turning it past his own goalkeeper.

Dixon then had to be sharp as former Pools midfielder Chris Beech’s side chased a match-clinching third but the goalie saved from Luke Charman.

Lawrence made a double change at the interval with new signings Tom Parkes and Courtney Duffus introduced in place of Kieran Wallace and Anthony Mancini.

Pools had a couple of efforts but Joe Grey’s shot was a tame one and Cooke’s attempt was saved.

Lawrence made his final throw of the dice on 73 minutes when Hastie was brought on for teenage full-back Louis Stephenson.

And what a throw of the dice as the Scot made an instant impact with his fourth goal of the season, curling a beauty past Coasters keeper Theo Richardson.

With the wind in their sails, Pools chased an equaliser and came agonisingly close from a free-kick. Cooke made the perfect connection but his dead-ball strike hit the underside of the crossbar and bounced into the box and to safety.

Late on, Hastie was at it again and tried to repeat his trick from earlier when he went for goal, but this time his shot went into the crowd.

It meant Pools slipped to their 15th defeat of the season and they remain 16th in the table.
