Match Report: Kevin Phillips off and running

27 January 2024

A second-half brace from Mani Dieseruvwe secured the three points for Pools in Kevin Phillips’ first game in the Suit Direct Stadium dugout.

Phillips made four changes to the side from Tuesday’s defeat to Kidderminster, with new signings Luke Waterfall and Otis Khan being handed debuts. Dieseruvwe and Callum Cooke also returned to the starting line-up for after returning from injury.

Pools made a bright start to the game with Anthony Mancini linking up well with Khan and Dieseruvwe, but they couldn’t quite craft a clear-cut chance.

The visitors did respond with a chance of their own when Scott Burgess found the head of Will Davies in the box, but he couldn’t direct his effort on goal.

The last 20 minutes of the half were much quieter, with Pools limited to chances for Tom Parkes and Luke Waterfall from set-pieces.

York started the second half strongly with Billy Chadwick and Dipo Akinyemi both missing chances to put their side a goal ahead.

But York’s pressure left counter opportunities for Pools, which Cooke looked to have taken advantage of, but his effort dragged just wide of the post.

Pools grew into the half and their efforts were rewarded in the 72nd minute Dieseruvwe turned the ball home to take the lead. Courtney Senior, making his debut from the bench, whipped a cross in which the goalkeeper couldn't deal with and Dieseruvwe was on hand to tap home.

York fought for an equaliser but couldn’t make a breakthrough as Pools’ new-look defence held strong.

With just minutes to go, Dieseruvwe won and converted a penalty from Joe Grey's pass, slotting cooly into the bottom corner to send the Pools faithful into chorus.

Dipo Akinyemi scored in stoppage time for the visitors as his effort just snook under the hands of Joel Dixon in the Pools net.

The York City striker came close again in the 98th minute, but his effort curled around the post as Pools held onto their first three points under new boss Phillips.

The victory sends Hartlepool up to 12th in the National League table, seven points off the play-off places.
