Interview: Kevin Phillips post Altrincham

20 February 2024

Kevin Phillips was pleased with his side’s second half display following Tuesday night’s 3-2 home win over Altrincham.

“I’m delighted with the win,” stated the Pools Head Coach.

“It’s another three points on the board and it’s another step in the right direction. The dressing room is buzzing. We deserved it based on the second half performance, but the first half was nowhere near good enough.

“There’ll be games like that, every team has them, where for whatever reason you’re not at the races. Our hard work and effort just wasn’t there for large parts of the first half, but it was important to not let that define us.

“We had some words at half-time and the lads showed some honesty. The response in the second half was excellent and we showed what we’re capable of.

“Every single player was immense in that second half. Our midfield ran their socks off, the defence stayed solid and we created chance after chance.

“We made that tactical change at half-time, as well as bringing Louis Stephenson on, and that impacted things massively. Louis was great for us tonight and has an excellent attitude to constantly improve and progress.

“The whole defence was solid. David Ferguson put another great shift in and he’s full of confidence at the minute. I want to give a special mention to Manny Onariase as well - he’s been a top professional, keeping his head up when he’s out the team and stepping straight in when called upon.

“Joe Grey was at the forefront of everything going forward today, and obviously Mani Dieseruvwe was huge with the two goals.

“Our home form will be vital if we’re going to build something, and that’s two excellent wins for us here. I’ve been told it’s our first midweek win since August 15, so it’s nice to put that right as well.

“The supporters were excellent and it’s nice to send them home happy again. We want to keep a positive atmosphere around the place so please continue to keep the lads encouraged and get behind them.

“Unfortunately, Luke Hendrie went off early after feeling his hamstring go - that’s something we’ll have to look at this week if it is a bad one. Brennan Dickenson probably struggled with the two games in a short space of time as he’s still building up his match fitness - that’s why we took him off.

“The lads have played a lot of minutes and the injuries don’t help us. From my experience, it’s about pulling together as one and we definitely done that tonight.”
