Match Report: Pools victorious in FA Youth Cup

2 October 2023

Hartlepool United claimed their spot in the next round of the FA Youth Cup with a comprehensive performance against Blyth Spartans in the second qualifying round.

As the heavens opened on the Suit Direct Stadium, Pools were left beaming as they defeated Blyth in a five-star performance on Monday night.

The result could've been very different had Spartans took their early chance. Leon Burke and Oliver Farley combined for the visitors, but the former could only find the side netting from a tight angle.

On 12 minutes, the deadlock was shattered. Max Storey showed a burst of energy on the left flank, skipping past two defenders before allowing Millen Burnett to slide the ball home at close-range.

Burnett nearly added to his tally moments later, latching onto Charlie Berry's pass, but the forward hooked wide from distance.

The advantage was doubled on 23 minutes. Stand-in skipper Leo Robinson received possession on the edge of the area and picked out the bottom right corner superbly.

Robinson was twice denied in the following minutes as Blyth defenders stuck their bodies on the line, while Joe Kitching forced a good save from away goalkeeper Max Campbell.

The Blyth keeper again proved his worth with a neat stop to deny Storey. Campbell couldn't keep out Hartlepool's number 11 for much longer though, as Storey got the better of him on the 37 mark with a driven strike from range.

Burke pulled one back for Blyth five minutes before the break. However, straight after half-time, Storey regained the three-goal advantage with a curling strike from 20 yards.

Pools looked comfortable in possession throughout the second half, though Blyth almost pulled one back around the hour as Burke was denied by Jake Wilkinson one-on-one.

Robinson slashed an effort over for Pools, before the fifth eventually arrived through Euan McBride. The substitute unleashed a strike from the edge of the box, which hit the net through a deflection.
