Academy: Guiseley defeat Pools in Youth Cup

19 October 2023

Hartlepool United Academy fell out of the FA Youth Cup on Wednesday night following a narrow defeat at Guiseley's Nethermoor Park.

Pools took an early lead through Alfie Steel on eight minutes. The forward latched onto Euan McBride's flick on and squeezed his effort past the Guiseley goalkeeper at the bottom right corner.

Jack Mason and Oliver Sturrs came close to equalising for Guiseley. However, the visitors nearly went two ahead on the 20 minute mark as a goalline scramble saw Max Storey unable to convert at close-range.

K'Marni Miller swerved a strike wide from distance for the Lions, before the hosts eventually found their leveller on 29 minutes. That came through number nine Danyaal Khan, who held onto possession in close quarters before directing a strike over the Pools goalkeeper from range.

Both sides had chances before Guiseley took the lead with 58 on the clock. Max Dickinson picked out Mason from the centre circle, and the winger dispatched his shot into the bottom left corner after cutting inside.

That proved to be the winner for the hosts. They nearly found another when Dickinson's header at point-blank range was tipped over the bar by Jake Wilkinson in the Pools goal.

Following Wednesday night's defeat, Hartlepool take a short break before returning to league action on Saturday, October 28 with a trip to Grimsby Town. That will allow time for Ian McGuckin's side to heal with the likes of Oliver Duthie, Joseph Aungiers, Campbell Darcy and Leo Robinson all injured over recent weeks.
